The Classical Ravens

As an Official Member of the New Mexico Junior Classical League, The Classical Ravens are a wonderfully active group of students who work together to promote their interest and academic goals in Latin, Greek, Roman & Greek History, Classical Art and Mythology of all Classical forms.

Headed up by their Sponsors, Diana Webb & Kari Barrera for multiple years now, The Classical Ravens is one of our cornerstone programs that has experienced continuous and growing success.

 

 

Classical Thursdays Program

 

9:00-10:15am         Latin Ia (ages 8+)

9:00-10:15am         Exploratory Latin Fun (Ages 5-7)

10:15-11:30             Classical History (ages 8+)

11:30-12:30pm        Topics in Mythology (ages 8+)

12:30-1:00pm         Lunch and Social Time

1:00-3:00               Advanced Mythology (ages 12+)

3:00-5:00              Advanced Roman Civ (ages 12+)

 

*Global Arts & Cultures program will be held on same day at same location.

Classical Ravens Club Membership Requirements

 

General Requirements:

      Ages 8-12

              Must attend and participate in the 2016 NMJCL Convention in ABQ

              Member of AHEC

              Exam registration fees (usually between $3.-$5. per exam)

 

      Ages 12-18  (Advanced Classics Students)

              Must be enrolled in some form of formal Latin Study

              Must attend and participate in the 2016 NMJCL Convention in ABQ

              Member of AHEC

              Join NJCL/NMJCL for exam and convention participation (we handle this for you)

             Exam registration fees (usually between $3.-$5. per exam)

Specific Program Info

 

Latin Ia - Beginner's Latin

Ages 8+

Thursdays 9:00 - 10:15

Using Cambridge Latin we will move through 1/2 of the book throughout the year. This is a beginners course with an intentionally slow pace. We will focus on the content as well as on activities and lessons to bring the material to life. My goal is to help students fall in love with the language and culture, not to beat them over the head with repetition and memorization.

We will have in class activities as well as online assignments to be completed via Edmodo (a safe reliable education platform)

*This course includes preparation for the Exploratory Latin Exam.

 

 

Classical History - Exploring Ancient Greece & Rome

Ages 8+

Fall: Ancient Greek History

Spring: Ancient Roman History

Through Dorothy Mills Books of Ancient... series as well as the Famous Men series we will discover the classical world and its culture.  We will have additional resources which will help to bring life in these ancient times back to life.

We will have in class activities as well as online assignments to be completed via Edmodo (A safe, reliable education platform)

*This course includes preparation for the Classical Literacy Exam.

 

 

Topics in Mythology

Ages 8+

Thursdays 11:30-12:30pm

This course is for students who have an interest in Mythology and exploring various classical themes.  Starting with Norse and moving through Greek & Roman Mythology we will make a few stops in Egypt and Africa as we explore the magical world of classical and ancient mythology.

We will have in class activities as well as online assignments to be completed via Edmodo (A safe, reliable education platform)

*This course includes preparation for the National Mythology Exam.

 

 

Advanced Mythology

Age 12 +

For the dedicated scholar: A course that challenges each student with creative writing, reading comprehension, study skills, and research. Preparation for NME, Medusa, CLE and NCEE tests.

State and National Convention preparation and membership to NMJCL and NJCL. Reference materials begin with elementary and midschool level and include mostly high school to college level reading sources. Students must be able to complete work assignments between class meetings and come prepared to speak and share in class. Some group projects and individual projects will be included.

This course makes use of Edmodo for communication and assignment management.

 

 

 

Advanced Roman Civilization

Ages 12+

Thursdays 3:00 - 5:00pm

Join us as we explore Roman history, the people, the customs and the impact of this influential civilization.  Students will use a prepared reader to move through this fast paced class. We will have a lot of fun using a variety of learning tools and activities, however this class is for the serious student, and the expectations and workload is geared toward the focused and passionate learner.

This course will utilize both in-class assignments as well as homework via Edmodo.

 

Prerequisite: Previous course in or passion for Classical Roman History & Culture

*This course includes prep for the National Roman Civ Exam, Classical Literacy Exam, Classical Scholars Exam as well as support to students taking the National Latin Exam and the National Latin Vocabulary Exam.

Students will practice playing Certamen and working on preparation for the NMJCL and National Conventions.
